I am from Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, where I did my under graduation in Biology. My master degree In Zoology I earned at PUCRS, Porto Alegre/RS. I am a PhD candidate in Animal Biology at UFRGS, Porto Alegre/RS. I am married and really happy with a very lovely person – Regina. My main research focus is population ecology and conservation of birds.

Many years ago, I saw a large, yellow bird that I at first mistook for an escaped canary. Then I noticed that it had a crest and black markings on the face, like a cardinal. I looked and looked for information on yellow cardinals and couldn't find anything at the time. Could I have seen one of these guys? If so, how did it wind up in OHIO? Are there color variations among red cardinals, or is it possible there's a breeding population of yellow ones somewhere in Ohio? Has anyone else in the States seen these birds?
i am a thirteen year old girl. i live in ohio and i saw one too.i searched on the internet YELLOW CARDINAL and i got that they live in south america and it didn't look like the red cardinal. i thought maybe it's color could come from the food it eats. tell me what you think.

Hi,
Well it's not unusual find paled red Northern Cardinals, making them yellow. But they still are Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). This happens because of food or gene expression (different albinism expression, for instance). The Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) ranges only in South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil).
